上海江滨造船厂电焊女工、劳动模范丁小亚从南方疗养归来。当她准备参加同事朱丽芳的婚礼时，却发现自己和男青工杜海都未收到邀请。在后面的工作中，组长陈金根和朱丽芳等人又对丁小亚当劳模一事百般嘲讽。小亚只好将全部热情倾注在工作上，努力忘却周围人对她的疏远和冷淡。后来，陈金根为了奖金，要小亚以劳模身份向领导求情，遭到拒绝，遂蓄意报复，小亚负伤入院。 杜海在一次维修吊塔的过程中发生事故，他舍身救下工友，却遭到不公正待遇，小亚对他充满同情。不久，居民村发生火灾，杜海奋力参加抢救，朱丽芳还误会录音机丢失是杜海所为。真相大白后，杜海不计前嫌，又积极帮助朱丽芳建新房。当他收工回到家，发现丁小亚正为自己生火做饭。在相互的理解中，两颗孤独的心紧紧地贴在了一起。。A film version of a play Fassbinder directed in Hamburg, Clare Booth Luce's "The Women".
